KB0031: Why are Kindle files larger than Epub files?

Kindle files generated by Kindlegen (as opposed to Calibre) also incorporate the original source files, so that Amazon has the option to later recompile the ebook with newer software. However, the customer is likely to be sent a smaller file from the Kindle store.

Note also that Amazon recommends Kindlegen for the creation of Kindle files. Using an unapproved Kindle file compiler, such as Calibre, may produce poor results or cause ebooks to be rejected from the Kindle store.

When Jutoh compiles a Kindle file (for example using the standard Kindle configuration), it shows the estimated KF7 and KF8 deliverable sizes in the Errors window. If there are no compile messages and the Errors window does not show automatically, you can show it with the menu command View | Error Window (Alt+5).
