KB0080: I have problems launching my Epub or Mobipocket file

If there was a misconfiguration in Windows or other operating system, the .epub or other ebook extension may have accidentally been associated with the wrong program. For example, if the extension .epub was accidentally associated with a program that no longer exists, you might see this error message:

Execution of command "C:\Program Files (x86)\Some Program\SomeProgram.exe" "C:\Projects\Fiction\test.epub" failed (error 2: the system cannot find the file specified.)

To launch an Epub (or Mobi), Jutoh will either use the default application for this kind of file (as defined in Windows or other operating system), or it will use a command that has been configured in Jutoh's Preferences, in the Helpers page.

So either the problem arises because .epub has accidentally been associated with the wrong program in the operating system, or the command for the .epub extension has been configured wrongly in Preferences/Helpers.

First, you could try fixing it in the operating system (on Windows, via Windows Explorer) by making sure the .epub extension is associated with a suitable Epub viewer, such as Adobe Digital Editions. Simply installing an Epub viewer program may fix it. Then try restarting Jutoh and trying again.

If that doesn't work, try configuring an Epub viewer in Jutoh.

  1. Go to Preferences/Helpers (click Options in the Jutoh toolbar).

  2. Select Epub files (epub) in the File types drop-down list.

  3. Click Configure Viewers.

  4. If the list of of viewers just consists of Default, click Add to add a new viewer. Give it a name, e.g. ADE, and click Browse and select a suitable executable file, e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Digital Editions 4.5\DigitalEditions.exe. If there was already a viewer, click on it and click Browse to ensure the executable path is set correctly.

  5. Click OK and OK again.

  6. Try launching the Epub again.

If you get a menu of options when you click Launch, and you don't want the Default one to come up, edit the Epub Viewers again as above and clear Show this command for the Default viewer. (The Default viewer represents the default application for this kind of ebook.)
