KB0169: Why does my book have no paragraph spacing in Kindle Look Inside?

You may find that when using Look Inside for your book in some geographical locations (such as the U.S., as opposed to the U.K.), the paragraph spacing is omitted and the text is all bunched up. This only happens in Look Inside, and not when the book is viewed on any actual device or application. The solution is to set Paragraph dimension units to Em in your Kindle configuration, compile, and resubmit to Amazon. You may see small differences in indents, paragraph spacing and margins due to the difference in units.

More detailed information

Before Jutoh 2.33, Kindle configurations were initialised with this configuration option switched off, for maximum compatibility with some older Kindle devices. On these devices, conversion to em (a relative unit) caused inter-paragraph spacing not to appear if the spacing size was less than 2.5mm. This is no longer the case and absolute dimensions cause problems for some implementations of Look Inside which require 'em' specification of dimensions such as paragraph spacing. For some reason, it happens at www.amazon.com, but not www.amazon.co.uk (although if you use www.amazon.com and Amazon knows your actual location, it may still use the UK page appearance - thoroughly confusing). Put another way, when you see the book edition(s) named in clickable boxes on its Amazon page, it's the glitchy version of Look Inside, and when you see the cover with a silver "kindle edition" tab under the cover image, it's the non-glitchy version (at the time of writing, June 2015).

Jutoh warning

Jutoh gives a warning if the Paragraph dimension units option is not set to Em in your Kindle configuration:

WARNING (Jutoh): the configuration option 'Paragraph dimension units' is not set to Em. Set to Em for Amazon Look Inside compatibility.

If you wish to suppress the warning, go to Preferences/Advanced/Warnings and clear Relative dimensions warning.
