KB0326: How do I have both footnotes and endnotes in the same project?

See also: Working with footnotes and endnotes in the Jutoh manual

Normally you choose between placing footnotes at the end of each section, and placing them all in a separate endnotes section. You can switch between the two modes by going to Project Properties/Indexes/Footnotes & Endnotes and checking either Generate footnotes at the end of each section or Generate endnotes in a separate section.

However, you may wish to have some footnotes at the end of chapters, and others in a separate section of endnotes. You can achieve this by telling Jutoh the location of each individual footnote, and also setting endnotes mode so that Jutoh does the extra endnotes compilation step when updating the document.

The steps are as follows:

  1. Edit each footnote by clicking on it. You will see a Location field which you can set to (auto) (use the current footnote/endnote setting), Footnote (always put it in a footnote) or Endnote (always put it in an endnote). If you want to see all the footnotes in your project, use the Inspector tab in the Formatting Palette.

  2. Set the footnote options to use endnotes in Project Properties/Indexes/Footnotes & Endnotes.

  3. Choose different numbering schemes in the Footnotes & Endnotes properties to avoid confusion, e.g. i,ii,iii for chapter footnotes and 1,2,3 for endnotes.

  4. Use Book | Update to update the endnotes section. You need to do this any time your footnotes change; to avoid having to do this manually, check Automatically build endnotes in the Footnotes & Footnotes properties - endnotes will then be updated each time you compile the book.
