KB0074: How do I add hyperlinks?

You can add internal links, or external web links (URLs).

To add an internal link, first add a bookmark where you would like to link to, using Format | Insert | Links | Bookmark. You can either select some text first and insert the bookmark, in which case the bookmark will be associated with the text, or you can just insert a bookmark without a selection, in which case a bookmark symbol will be added. You may need the latter method if the text already has a link to another location. Then, select the text that you would like to link to the bookmark, and use Format | Insert | Links | Link to Page. Now choose the page and bookmark within the page.

To add an external web link (URL), use Format | Insert | Links | URL and type or paste the URL. Note that some devices that lack web browsers will not be able to make use of the link.

You can use the same technique to link from images. Select the image (for example by going to the position to the left of it, then holding down shift and pressing the right arrow key) and then use the Format | Insert | Links | URL command or Format | Insert | Links | Link to Page command.

If you're having trouble selecting an image, you can use the Inspector to select the image. Click on Inspector in the Formatting Palette, choose Images from the drop-down control, and double-click on an image in the list of images.

Note that just because text looks like a link, it doesn't mean that it's a clickable link (for example if an editor has forgotten to add a link, but has formatted the text with a "Hyperlink" style). You can tell whether there is a link by hovering the mouse pointer over the text: the pointer will change to a hand symbol if there is a link. The link will also be described in the Formatting Palette's Styles tab when the text cursor is on the link.

Removing a hyperlink

To remove a whole hyperlink, click on it and then click on the Remove button.

If you want to remove part of the link, perhaps because you want to type more text after the hyperlink and it's applying the hyperlink to the new text, first select the part you wish to remove the link from. Don't click the link, because this will remove the selection. Instead, for a URL, use the menu command Format | Insert | Links | URL and click Remove. For a page link, use the command Format | Insert | Links | Link to Page and click Remove.
