KB0235: How can I get headings split across paragraphs to show in the table of contents?

See also: Building a table of contents in the Jutoh manual

Sometimes chapter headings appear in two paragraphs, for example:

Chapter 1

Introduction

In this case, if you're using the command Format | Book | Build Table of Contents to create a TOC page in your project, Jutoh will find at most one of the paragraphs per chapter.

Solution 1

In the Build Table of Contents dialog (or TOC properties in Project Properties/Indexes/Contents), set the 2nd field for Level 1 to be a pattern that matches against secondary heading styles, such as "Secondary Heading". Then create and apply the "Secondary Heading" style to each secondary heading (such as "Introduction" above). Now when you build the TOC, it will find both the primary and secondary headings and append them using a separator you can specify in the TOC properties.

Solution 2

A workaround is to type the full chapter heading as the name of chapter (click in the heading above the editor to start editing the name). For example, "Chapter 1: Introduction". Then, run the Build Table of Contents command, this time making sure that it *doesn't* pick up Heading 1 headings from the actual document. Choose any other style, such as "Dummy", for Jutoh to search for. Then Jutoh, having failed to find the heading in the document, will use the document name instead.

If you're leaving TOC creation to Jutoh and not using Build Table of Contents, then you will only need to rename the documents.
