KB0239: Why does Jutoh warn about blank paragraphs?

You may see messages like this if the reporting option is set to High:

TIP(Jutoh): this project has 47 blank paragraphs.

This message gives you the opportunity to improve your project's formatting, if you wish. Although most of us are in the habit of using blank paragraphs to indicate spacing, it's a hangover from the era of typewriters and doesn't always format well in ereaders. Ideally, the spacing should be specified in your paragraph styles. For example, Jutoh sets the spacing after the "Heading 1" style to 6 mm (60 tenths of a mm in the style dialog). You can create your own styles just to add spacing, for example "Author" to add spacing in your title page, or "Scene Spacer" so you can give scenes breathing space when the viewpoint changes.

To edit an existing style, such as "Heading 1", go to the Styles tab on the Formatting Palette, right-click (or control-click on Mac) over the relevant style, click Edit, and enter spacing in the Indents & Spacing tab. Similarly, you can use your word processor of choice (Word, LibreOffice etc.) to apply styles that specify spacing, so you no longer get warnings in Jutoh.

You can also use the Format | Book | Formatting Cleanup command to remove blank paragraphs or replace them with a style. Let's say you've formatted all your headings with the "Heading 1" style, and have now edited and added spacing to it. To remove the paragraphs that follow these headings, in the Formatting Cleanup dialog:

  1. Check Convert following empty paragraphs to styles with spacing.

  2. Choose "Heading 1" in both the fields underneath (Existing style and New style).

  3. Press OK.

If you are pushed for time, don't worry about this too much, but perhaps bear it in mind for future projects. You can switch the tip off for all projects by going to Preferences/Advanced and setting Blank paragraphs warning threshold to a large number. Conversely, you can set this to 1 and Jutoh will warn you about each blank paragraph and allow you to see its location. The default value is 20, so a few blank paragraphs are forgiven, for example in a title page.
