KB0245: Why does Jutoh warn about line spacing?

If Reporting is set to High, and you are compiling for HTML, Epub or Kindle, Jutoh may show a tip telling you that your document has line spacing. Line spacing is best avoided if possible, because ebook devices are designed to show text at optimal spacing, and user adjustments to the spacing may be defeated if line spacing is hard-wired in the book.

Extra line spacing can look unsatisfactory on a small screen, and equally, hard-wiring single (normal) line spacing could reduce the ability of a reader to customise their experience. Line spacing might also indicate that the original document imported into Jutoh was prepared to aid proof-reading, rather than for publishing.

Jutoh will only warn about the first instance of line spacing, to avoid a flood of distracting errors - the entire book might have line spacing, causing thousands of tips to be shown. However, the provided hint will give an option of searching for line spacing in your document, to help you find all occurrences.

To fix the problem:

  1. To quickly remove line spacing for the compiled ebook, edit the configuration Generate line spacing and disable it. There's a link in the hint, so you can click on that. This will switch off line spacing for the whole generated ebook (for this configuration) and the tip will no longer show. Or, to remove line spacing specification from your project content permanently:

  2. If line spacing has been specified in a named style, e.g. 'Normal', rather than an automatic/directly formatted style such as 'Normal + Line Spacing', then Jutoh will provide an option for editing the style. Click on Indents & Spacing, and set Line Spacing to '(none)'.

  3. If line spacing has been specified by direct formatting, e.g. 'Normal + Line Spacing', then you can remove the formatting by clicking on the single line spacing tool in the Tools tab of the Formatting Palette; or you can use Edit | Find and Replace (Ctrl+F) to search for the style name 'Normal + Line Spacing' and replace it with 'Normal'.

  4. You can also use Find &Replace to find all the places where line spacing was used, regardless of actual value. Click on More >> in the Find dialog, click Add in Additional Criteria, and choose Paragraph Formatting Present. Then choose a line spacing value other than '(none)' and press OK. Clicking on Find will now find any paragraph with line spacing specified.

You can switch the tip off for all projects by clicking on the Options tool in the toolbar and clearing the advanced setting Line spacing warning.
