When you import a style sheet in the Project Properties/Styles page, you can merge styles with an existing styles, preserving the old styles that don't have a new equivalent. If style names clash, the new style will always overwrite the old. However, for this to happen, the style sheet name in your imported style sheet (not the file name itself) must match the existing style name in your project.
When importing a style sheet with the same name as an existing one, you will be asked "Keep any existing styles not defined in the new sheet?"
