KB0369: Why do otherwise blank paragraphs show a hyphen, dash or underline when previewed?

If blank paragraphs are showing in the ebook with what looks like a hyphen, or dash, or underline, but this doesn't show in Jutoh, then this is probably what is happening.

You are using a blank paragraph to create space between paragraphs (or at the start of a chapter). However, instead of using an innocuous style such as "Normal", the paragraph has a style that includes underlining - perhaps a heading style.

In order for blank paragraphs to be emitted in the ebook, and not just ignored, Jutoh adds a hard space. So now we have an underlined space - and this shows up in the previewed ebook as a random dash.

To avoid this, either apply a style such as "Normal" to the blank paragraph, or - better - add before-paragraph or after-paragraph spacing to your named styles so that you don't need to have blank paragraphs.
