How do I add or remove automatic heading numbering?
You may wish some, but not all, chapter headings to be numbered automatically. For example, you may have a preface that should not be numbered.
Say you're using a heading style "Heading 1" to format your headings, and this style is set in your outline style in order to trigger automatic numbering. Add a new style, for example called "Heading 1 No Numbering", and in the Based on field, choose "Heading 1".
Apply this new style to your preface or other unnumbered chapter headings, and use Book | Update to update numbering. Automatic numbering will no longer recognise "Heading 1 No Numbering" headings as needing numbering. However, if your advanced table of contents specifies "Heading 1*" for styles to match, it will still catch the unnumbered headings for the table of contents.
