KB0209: Why does Jutoh warn about a missing toc guide type?

When compiling an Epub or Kindle file, you may see this warning:

WARNING (Jutoh): no table of contents will be generated and no 'toc' guide type was found.

The 'toc' guide type is usually associated with one of the documents in your project, and tells the ebook reader software which document contains the table of contents. If this information is missing, your readers may see a greyed-out menu item, and they may conclude that the book is broken. Although the reader software will generally present a list of chapters (via the Jutoh-generated navmap or NCX file), a separate table of contents document gives you more control over how the reader navigates the book.

By default, Jutoh will generate a TOC document and associate a 'toc' guide type with it. Equally, if you used the Format | Book | Build Table of Contents command to build an advanced TOC, Jutoh will have assigned the 'toc' guide type to the new TOC document. But if you disabled the configuration option Generate table of contents because you have your own TOC document, then you should edit your TOC document properties (right-click over the document in the project outline) and choose 'toc' in the Guide type field.

If you really don't want a TOC document in your project, you can suppress the warning by editing preferences, clicking Advanced, and clearing Missing toc guide type warning.
