All about style sheets in the Jutoh manual

Styles come in 'named' and 'automatic' variants. Named styles that you can edit include "Normal", "Body Text", "Heading 1", and any others you choose to add. Automatic styles contain a '+' in the name and can't be edited - they are created automatically by direct formatting. For example, applying left indent to a "Normal" paragraph via the Tools tab creates a style "Normal + Left Indent". In general, it's best not to format directly like this, but instead adjust existing named styles or create new ones.

Jutoh shows all the named styles in the style sheet, such as "Normal", "Body Text", etc, plus automatic styles in the currently-edited document (chapter). But automatic styles from other documents won't show, unless by coincidence because you have applied similar direct formatting in multiple documents.

Automatic styles are stored locally in each document. They are not global to the project, they are not all shown at once in the Styles tab, and similar automatic style names may or may not exist from one document to the next. So, to consistently apply styles throughout your project, use named styles such as "Heading 1" - not automatic styles.

It may be initially confusing; but here are some reasons why automatic styles are not all stored in the main style sheet:

  1. it would clutter up the style sheet with lots of extraneous styles, making it harder to edit the style sheet in Project Properties/Styles and more awkward to export to another project;

  2. whenever direct formatting was applied or removed, the project properties would need to be changed and marked as needing to be saved, instead of just changing the individual document;

  3. the direct formatting for the whole project could swamp the Styles tab and other locations where styles are listed, making it harder to find and apply styles.
