KB0429: Kindle removes some text colours in the downloaded book

A Jutoh user has noted that text colours can go missing in books downloaded from Amazon, even though they look fine in Kindle Previewer.

This arises when you have a paragraph style specifying coloured text - say, orange - but with spans of text overriding that colour with black. In this case, the black text may be ignored so all text is formatted with the paragraph colour.

This is an example of where relying entirely on Kindle Previewer to ensure your formatting is correct - as recommended by Amazon - falls down.

It's possible that the black colour is 'optimized out' by Amazon, who may remove colours that could prevent adaptation to user-selected colours. Normally one might assume that black text can simply use the system defaults, since the background colour will change to provide a contrast. Unfortunately, in this case, an explicit black colour is required to override the paragraph colour.

With luck this bug will be corrected, but meanwhile, you may be able to work around it by specifying dark blue text instead of black. If you use a character style to format these spans of text, you can use the configuration option Character style substitutions to substitute a different style for your Kindle configuration - so you can continue to use true black for other formats such as Epub and OpenDocument.

Or, you can format the non-black spans of text with the required colour instead of specifying the colour in the paragraph style. However, if you have a lot of formatting to change, this may not be practical.

If you need to test changes in your published book, you can configure your device to receive updates, and email Amazon to push the latest edition of your book to customers who subscribe to automatic updates, as described at https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G200966010.
