KB0409: How can I launch either Kindle for PC/Mac or Kindle Previewer from Jutoh?

If you install Kindle Previewer with Jutoh's help, Jutoh will associate a command called "Kindle Previewer" with the .mobi file extension, to allow the Launch button to open the ebook in Kindle Previewer automatically.

However, Jutoh may disable these commands, because the "Default" command already launches Kindle Previewer via the operating system's default file associations. Without disabling the extra command, Jutoh would present a choice of "Default" and "Kindle Previewer", which would be redundant.

Let's say you then installed Kindle for PC or Mac, and the default file association for .mobi changed to open the Kindle application. But you now want the choice between the Kindle application and Kindle Previewer. So, you can enable the "Kindle Previewer" command:

  1. Click Options on the toolbar, and click Helpers.

  2. Select " Kindle files (mobi)" from File types and click Configure Viewers.

  3. Click on the "Kindle Previewer" command and check Show this command.

  4. Click OK, and OK again.

Now when you click Launch, you should see a menu giving you the choice of "Default" (the default system file association, i.e. Kindle for PC/Mac) and "Kindle Previewer".

It's possible that when you install Kindle for PC/Mac, the system won't make the Kindle application the default association for .mobi, so "Default" will still show the Kindle Previewer. If this happens, you can change the file association in the operating system.

On Mac:

  1. Control-click over a .mobi file in Finder, and click Get Info.

  2. Click Open with... and choose "Kindle".

  3. Click Change All... and confirm.

On Windows:

  1. Right-click over a .mobi file in Windows Explorer, and click Properties.

  2. Next to Open with, click Change and choose the application to open (Kindle).

If you can't make the operating system default to opening the right viewer, go into the Jutoh helpers again as above, disable the "Default" command, and add a command for the viewer you would like to use, specifying the full path of the program. You might also want to do this just to give a clearer name than "Default" when offered a choice of viewers.
