KB0217: Does Jutoh support hyphenation?

See also: How can I preview enhanced typesetting for Kindle files?

Jutoh doesn't support automatic hyphenation (insertion of soft hyphens), but some viewers and word processors will perform hyphenation anyway, such as Apple Books, Kindle and LibreOffice.

Hyphenation may not appear when you preview your Kindle book, say with Kindle Previewer 2 or Kindle for PC, but will appear when you use a device or Kindle Previewer 3. If hyphenation doesn't appear immediately in the online Kindle viewer, Amazon may process it in due course to enable enhanced typesetting features.

Also, you can insert individual soft hyphens for troublesome words, such as a long medical term, using Format | Insert | Symbols | Soft Hyphen, and also from the Objects tab of the Formatting Palette. This will give the ereader a hint to break the word using a hyphen if there is insufficient space on the line; otherwise no hyphen will be shown. Soft hyphens are supported in Kindle and some other devices but not yet in Adobe Digital Editions.

To find soft hyphen objects in your book, you can use the Inspector tab of the Formatting Palette and select Fields. Then type "soft hyphen" into the search field, press Enter, and click on the left and right arrow buttons to navigate to matching objects.

To suppress hyphenation, edit the configuration option Styles suppressing hyphenation, or edit a style and check Suppress hyphenation in the Font page.

For OpenDocument files, the ability to hyphenate each paragraph is the default - switch off hyphenation for individual styles with Styles suppressing hyphenation. However, for some languages (such as English), hyphenation will not work unless you specify the country in the Language metadata, for example en-GB and not just en. Without this, LibreOffice may generate an error message when hyphenating with Tools | Language | Hyphenation:

en is not supported by the spell-check function or is not presently active. Please check your installation and, if necessary, install the required language module or activate it under 'Tools - Options - Language Settings - Writing Aids'.
